SAT PREPARATION
The SAT Reasoning Test was introduced in 1901 and is an important element for students in the college admissions process. According to the test makers, the SAT measures critical thinking skills that are needed for academic success in college by assessing how well test takers analyze and solve problems. The SAT is known to use tricky phrasing, and at about four hours long, it emphasizes mental endurance.
SAT Preparation at Somerset Learning Center begins with developing an individual plan for each student to maximize his or her score. Certified and experienced teachers provide private SAT tutoring using the most effective and comprehensive materials. Our SAT Prep program engages the student and provides her with the skills, strategies, and practice necessary to achieve her goals.

More about the SAT and our approach
The SAT is offered seven times a year, and consists of three major sections, described below. Each section receives a scaled score of 200-800, for a maximum possible score of 2,400.
- SAT Critical Reading - tests students’ vocabulary, understanding of sentence structure, and reading comprehension skills through sentence completions questions and comprehension of short and long passages. During SAT Prep at Somerset Learning Center, students receive weekly vocabulary lists (and quizzes). The SAT english tutor presents strategies and skills for improving reading rate and comprehension. Students learn to be actively engaged while reading difficult and lengthy passages.
- SAT Math - tests arithmetic, algebra 1 & 2, geometry, and data analysis & statistics. Solving SAT problems does not require knowledge of higher level math such as trigonometry or calculus. Instead, the ability to comprehend and quickly solve abstract problems that use a unique and tricky language is required. During SAT preparation at Somerset Learning Center, students learn how to recognize and apply what they already know to SAT type problems. SAT math tutors help students systematically review relevant math concepts and apply them to SAT problems of varying difficulty levels.
- SAT Writing – about 70% of the Writing score is based on two multiple choice sections that focus on grammar, word usage, and logical organization of ideas. 30% of the Writing score is based on a 25 minute written essay in response to a prompt. During private SAT tutoring at the Center, students learn the most commonly tested rules of grammar and usage and become skilled at recognizing errors and correcting sentences and paragraphs. Students also learn to write an effective essay in a short amount of time.
For students trying to qualify for the National Merit Scholarships or just getting an earlier start with test preparation, we design PSAT prep programs.
